Coherent Basic Education in Turun normaalikoulu
In Turun normaalikoulu we have been promoting the idea of coherent basic education. Our aim is a coherent and flexible education, which enables the pupils to grow, learn and their self-esteem to develop.
In practice coherent basic education in Norssi means that all the grades are located in the same building. Thus the pupils will learn to work and interact with children of different ages.
Our school has shared values as well as operational culture and activities. In basic education we follow common coherent curriculum, which has been compiled in co-operation among class teachers and subject teachers. The aim in compiling the curriculum is that it would serve the pupils coherently throughout their school years and that the teachers would be aware of the teaching methods used in each grade level.
It is common in Norssi that same teachers can teach grades 3-9. A class teacher can also work as a subject teacher in grades 7-9 and subject teachers can teach also in grades 3-6. Teachers should always be qualified to teach the grade in question.
The coherent basic education we practice in Norssi gives also the teacher trainees a chance to become familiar with the co-operation between class teachers and subject teachers. Our aim is that the future teachers will become aware of the opportunities and challenges of coherent basic education.
